Discover the unique in taste, five-layer traditional Agiasos basil pie, from Fournos Sousamlis in Lesvos…
A special Vasilopita is prepared in the mountainous Agiasos of Lesvos, with fifty fragrant thin sheets of dough, mizithra, many herbs, with special art and a lot of effort, while it is not missing from any home on New Year’s Eve.
It takes at least four hours to prepare, where housewives open, flavor the sheets one by one and place them, one on top of the other, after adding the mixture with the herbs and mizithra in between, while it takes more than four hours to bake in the oven.
The recipe is said to have come from Asia Minor, where it consists of flour, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and other herbs, mizithra, gruyere, sugar, soda, orange (juice and zest), butter and olive oil, anise (starch), almonds and sesame.
The ERT1 show “Connections” was found in Agios Dimitrios Agiasos and at the “Aingma” cafe where the owner Grigoria Koukoula made traditional Vasilopita for ERT.
